Just a week ago I was watching CNN en español with my parents as the first news feeds of an earthquake on the island of Hispaniola were released.
We learned about the event from my grandma in New York City, who usually calls my aunt in the Dominican Republic. That afternoon, just a week ago, my grandmother’s usual call to my aunt was different.
“Mom, you will not believe what just happened!!!” my aunt screamed on the phone.
“What happened?!!” my grandma got agitated.
“An earthquake….” she told my grandmother.
My grandmother, an elder woman, was captivated by the news. She was very concerned. She immediately called my mom and let her know what was going on. We tuned in to CNN en español only to find out that there was a tsunami warning for the Caribbean. We were definitely worried. However, it was still early; only a few hours after the earthquake had hit; the news was vague; no one knew much, not even the most trusted name in news.
Today, we know so much more. The major news networks have made it to the ground. The help has arrived. Many people have been saved, while many others have died. Haiti still needs the world. As everyday goes by, the disaster is worse; more people die, and many more become desperate, feeling forced to steal food and act on violence; looting.
I have personally followed the development of the event on NBC News and CNN, specifically Anderson Cooper 360. He did a great job reporting during Katrina. He is also doing great reporting from the ground in Haiti. I encourage everyone to check out Anderson Cooper every night at 10:00pm on CNN. He reports the story with the heart; he has that human touch essential in events like this one.
As a student of politics this event has inspired me to study politics of the developing world more than ever. I have so many questions without answers at the moment. I would love to learn how to create a plan to help developing countries deal with natural disasters. If the most powerful nation on earth could not deal well with Katrina, imagine countries in the Global South.
Haiti still needs the world.

i agree Aquiles! The bible did warn us of these things that are taking place right now, in the last days!! The bible is simply fulfilling itself....

acabo de leer tu entrada en english y me siento rara porque no use el traslator ni un diccionario, es lindo, muy lindo. Hablando de la vida, acabo de volver de vacaciones, por eso estube alejada de la red. Pero aca estoy, volvi. Tome mucho sol, estoy quemadita, la pase tambien muy bien por las noches cuando sali a bailar con amigos y los brasileros me calleron bastante bien! un besote gigante (besos a tu primo)
