It is truly a world of advertisements out there. A world where ads shape our daily lives, telling us what to wear, eat, listen to, simply what to do at all times.
Walking in Times Square, New York City not too long ago, I was overwhelmed with the quantity of advertisement boards that surrounded me. This was neither my first time at Times Square, or in a city. However, it was the first time I thought about the influence of advertisements in today’s society.
This picture shows an ad-board for GAP’s new campaign, “BORN TO FIT.”
The campaign has a social double meaning. It clearly talks about jeans and how they should fit your body. At the same time, it sends the message that we are born to fit. My response to the ad is the following: I was not born to fit. I was rather born to BE.
As a society we should not shape our qualities and personalities to fit into different social groups. We should rather embrace who we are and find groups willing to accept those personal characteristics that make us unique.
Advertisements are double-edge knives. They can help us identify places; inform us of products and events that we might be interested on; but they can also impose on society, making us less unique.
Admire advertisements, but think about them as well. Do not let some catchy message take over your unique persona.
Just thinking….

Advertisements are meant to get you to BUYBUYBUY! But since a lot of people have started seriously hating advertisements (see Tivo for skipping commercials, commercial-free hours on the radio) it's harder for companies to add subliminal messages. People in their society should realize that advertising does not mandate what's "in" or "out", and they should instead decide for themselves how to act and put on their body.
But then again, most of our society is dominated with people who don't think for themselves...
Definitely one of the best so far. I agree that you were born to be.. not to fit.
