This week I have been craving avocado salad (avocado what?!).
That’s right—avocado salad.
Avocados are quite popular in the Dominican Republic. The fruit is to Dominicans what bread is to French people, or tortillas to Mexicans, for avocados can be match with any dish—from soup to rice, and simple salads—of course.
And that is what I have been craving all week; a dish of sliced avocados with olive oil and salt spread on top. Delicious!
The problem is that I am in the American South, where Dominican cravings are simply cravings. It is really hard to find avocados in my area, and when you find them, the prices are outrageous.
This is a picture of a Dominican corner store, or what we call colmado, where they are selling avocados. A man passes by them not even noticing the delicious fruit. Only if he knew that a Dominican citizen, far from his homeland—a corner of the world where the sun sets on the beautiful hips of racially mixed women—wishes he was there, just to pick some avocados to make a simple salad.
School is almost over and I am coming home soon. My mom asked me yesterday what I wanted to eat when I came home. I should simply ask her for an avocado salad. Perhaps my craving would become a reality, even if a colmado is no where to be seen.
Just craving…

omg you wont believe what i had yesterday?? AVACADO!! mmmm, it is sooo good but sooo high in fat :( well, i hope ur mom's avacado salad makes ur cravings go away. :) also, i thought avacado was a vegetable?....
Oh dear, now I am craving an avocado salad! Lol. I was so happy to read this post. A lot of my friends do not like avocados. I think they are CRAZY.
One of my favorite things to eat is a chopped up avocado with a little lime and salt sprinkled on top. Yummy!
I didn't like avocadoes til very very recently. My grandma makes avocado salad. It's yummy. Yeah even up in New York, Avocadoes are extremely expensive. hmmmmm...

wow, i feel so special to have this post dedicated to me partly because we have both been craving avocado salads. I don't like it that many people don't even know what an avocado salad is... get some knowledge on culture! anyways, i hope to eat one soon enough
